COVID-19 Update
Preparing for hurricane season can be stressful, and because the 2020 hurricane season comes during the COVID-19 pandemic, it may be especially so.
As a storm approaches, listen to local officials on questions related to how you may need to adjust any plans based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and your local officials.
- Give yourself more time than usual to Assemble Disaster Supplies such as emergency food, water, and medicine supplies.
- Take steps to protect the health of your community when running essential errands and when filling prescriptions.
- Pay attention to local guidance about updated plans for evacuations and shelters, including potential shelters for your pets.
- When assembling disaster supply kits include items such as soap, hand sanitizer, and cloth face coverings.
- Follow social distancing recommendations when checking on neighbors and friends.
- Preparing for Emergencies: It's Never too Early to Start Teaching Kids. Children are most vulnerable when disaster strikes, follow these simple steps to help children be prepared for any disaster.

General Guidance
BEFORE:
- Preparing for a Hurricane or Other Tropical Storm
- Cover windows with storm shutters or plywood.
- Tune in for local information.
- Know how to turn off your gas, electricity, and water in case you need to evacuate.
- Secure outdoor items by moving them to the garage.
- Make an emergency kit, including at least a 7 day emergency supply of non-perishable food, water, and medicine.
- Designate a shelter area if you cannot evacuate. Rooms without windows are best.
AFTER:
- Stay Safe After a Hurricane or Other Tropical Storm
- If your home has damage, do not reenter until it has been examined by a building inspector for safety.
- Prevent mold growth; by airing out rooms and disinfecting.
- Tap water may not be safe to drink. Listen to local warnings. More information
- Throw away food that may be unsafe. More information
- Prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Use generators, stoves, and grills outside and away from windows and doors.
