SAY 'BOO' TO THE FLU WITH A YEARLY FLU SHOT

By Noreen Nickola-Williams

October 19, 2022

ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - While the change in weather may send chills up your spine, you can take steps to protect yourself from something that will literally give you the chills – and a fever, body aches and potentially pneumonia. Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses which can cause mild to severe illness and, at times, can lead to death. Protect yourself and loved ones by saying “Boo to the Flu” through receiving a yearly flu vaccine and by practicing healthy habits.

The Florida Department of Health encourages all Floridians older than six months to get their vaccinations before Halloween. While Florida’s flu season peaks in the early months of the new year, early vaccination provides protection during the busy time of year when many gatherings occur for seasonal celebrations and family events.

The Florida Department of Health in St. Johns County is providing a free pediatric “Boo to the Flu” immunizations clinic. This clinic is intended for infants and children from six months to 18 years of age. There is no cost for this walk-in clinic. Service will be provided on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. All children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with a valid form of identification.

Event location and hours:

In addition to an annual flu shot, the community is reminded of the importance of healthy habits and behaviors that prevent the spread of illness such as proper handwashing, frequent cleaning of hightouch surfaces, and staying home when sick.
