Death certificates excluding the cause of death are public record. Anyone may request a copy of a death certificate without the cause of death shown on it.

Who can obtain a copy of a death certificate?
- Without the cause of death listed:
- Death certificates excluding the cause of death are public record. Anyone may request a copy of a death certificate without the cause of death shown on it.
- With the cause of death listed:
- Death certificates with the cause of death listed are not public records. To obtain a copy of a death certificate with the cause of death listed, you must be an immediate family member of the decedent, and of legal age. This includes:
- Spouse
- Parent
- Son or Daughter
- Brother or Sister
- Grandchild
- Anyone who provides a will, insurance policy or other documentation that demonstrates their interest in the estate of the decedent, or anyone who provides documentation that he or she is acting on behalf of any of the previously mentioned persons, or by court order (must provide recorded or certified copy of the court order) may also obtain death certificates with the cause of death listed
- Death certificates with the cause of death listed are not public records. To obtain a copy of a death certificate with the cause of death listed, you must be an immediate family member of the decedent, and of legal age. This includes:
